INTRUSION DETECTION THROUGH
DNA CHARACTERIZATION

ABSTRACT

With growing Internet connectivity comes growing opportunities for attackers to illicitly attack the computer over the network. Continuous research is being carried upon to develop a completely dependable “Intrusion Detection” system with most of the research channeled towards developing new systems rather than adapting pre-existing ones. The research is mostly focussed on strengthening the security as opposed to recovery.

In this paper we present a new method to hit the headlines in the field of Intrusion Detection, namely “DNA Characterization” which draws its inspiration from the human genome, to detect the intrusion as early as possible. We do this, based upon the “Teiresias” algorithm, which helps us to generate a DNA sequence with which the newly generated sequences are compared and if there are any conflicts then the user is informed that a possible intrusion is happening. This is well illustrated by several self-explanatory examples. The long term goal of our paper is not only to develop a system with more “dependability” but also to enable “survivability” so as to hold its place in the ever challenging world of network intrusion and security.
